THIS WEEK AT CORNERSTONE

Camp Cornerstone is over, but certainly not forgotten! We had a total of 178 campers, including day campers. Thank you to Doug and Joan Boyd for planning and setting up the reservations and schedules for the entire weekend. They thought of everything, including security watchers and lifeguards! And a big thank you also to Rich and Cathy Cartier for the food planning and preparation. No one went hungry unless they just wanted to! Camp was a time to serve each other – not to be served. So, thanks to everyone that helped out with the children, teens, kitchen, security, gym, swimming pool, and cleanup. By the way, we only had two responses to the feedback form that was in the camper packet. We certainly want to hear from more of you – what did you think about camp this year – good or bad? It’s important for us to know so we can make plans for next year. Please respond to rich@cornerstonestaff.org . All those who did not come, we missed you, and hope you will plan to come next year.

Please remember that our Rally Day Potluck Picnic at Blackburn Park is on Saturday, September 11th, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is our celebration to kick off our new Sunday School schedule which begins the next day, Sunday, September 12th. Please bring food to share ♥ according to: A-J dessert; K-R meat; S-Z salad (fruit or vegetable) or bread. Water will be provided. Feel free to bring board or yard games as well.

We are assembling a Member Business Directory to give members the opportunity to utilize each other’s services when needed. It will provide professional information such as name, company, product/profession and contact information. Please consider being in it ♥ by contacting Carol Preiss at 314-968-0899 or Jo Anne at 314-968-9808; or, stop by the signup table in the Welcome Center and complete a form. We would like to have this directory available in a few weeks.

Sunday Suppers are starting back up in October. This is a great time for fellowship and to get to know people in a casual home setting. Nancy Hill will be at the sign up table starting this Sunday. Please stop by and sign up to attend or to host ♥ 6-8 people in your home. We especially need hosts for families with children as Sunday is a difficult day to get sitters.

♥ Adopt-A-Platoon – Let our troops know that we appreciate them by picking up a list of requested items by the donation basket in the Welcome Center, purchasing, bringing, and placing the items in the basket for shipping. Call Marta Guckes with questions (314-518-4310). We baked cookies several weeks ago and will set another cookie baking date closer to Thanksgiving so they receive them by Christmas.

Our Fall Congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, September 26th, right after our 2nd hour beginning with a potluck lunch and followed by our business meeting. The program will be to receive nominations for and to elect nominating committee members who will recommend candidates to replace those completing their term on our Elder and Deacon Boards. Please be in prayer to nominate Cornerstone members willing to serve.

Our Annual Congregational Meeting will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2011, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Details will be announced later.

New Fall Adult Education classes will begin on Sunday, September 12th at 10:45 a.m. (2nd hour) and will conclude December 5th – only Ion’s class (No. 3. below) will be during the 1st hour. Here is a synopsis of the FIVE elective classes that will be available to everyone (Rooms will be determined as soon as we know how many will be attending. Please sign up in the Welcome Center on Sunday):

“Glorious Change” is a women’s class. Please go to “Women’s Ministry” below for details.

Aaron Goldstein will teach a combined class to the high school youth and adults. ”The Book of Acts, Part I“ – In this study of the first twelve chapters of the Book of Acts we will examine this epic period in the history of God’s redemptive work. Special focus will be given to how the events of these chapters in history directly impact our lives as members of God’s people here in 2010, and how this book can inform our understanding of the church. Don’t miss out on this class that everyone will be talking about!!!

Ion will teach a class during the first hour (9:00 a.m.) on “Go and make disciples of all nations“. This is the most noble task ever entrusted to a human being. No follower of Jesus should take this commission for granted, understanding the honor and responsibility of doing this properly according to His standards. Since Jesus did not call anyone who has not been discipled to go and teach others, the first step is to become accountable to a godly teacher until we are prepared and ready to become mentors for others. But there are obstacles to achieving this goal. The first obstacle is moving from conviction to action. The second and even greater obstacle is to remain motivated enough to persevere. Many people begin with great enthusiasm only to give up along the way. Why is it so hard to be a doer? How does one remain motivated and focused on what is most important in our walk with Christ?

Let’s overcome these obstacles together learning from three different discipleship letters which emphasize different aspects of a disciple:

To remain purpose oriented (2 Timothy)

To grow in love (1 John)

To care for others (Philemon)

Pastor Terry will teach using the Book of Colossians. Colossians is about growing up in Christ. The goal of finding our sole satisfaction in Him and to be able to share this effectively with others.

Don’t have a commitment at 10:45? We will have coffee. Want time to share, voice prayer concerns, and pray? We have a class for you. And we’ll have coffee. The Drop-In Class, led by Allan Steele, will have a different, stand-alone Bible study or topic each week. For those times when we can’t cover everything, the two Sunday maximum rule comes into play and we will split a lesson, but never more than two Sundays. Did I mention we’ll have coffee? You may see a DVD or you may not. You will have discussion and time to share your insights and life lessons learned from our topic each week. We look forward to seeing you there. P.S. We will have COFFEE!

Karen Felton joined the YMCA but still needs one or two more women to pick up, stay with and bring her back home ♥ once a week for swimming and exercise. Please call her if you could spend a few hours a week with her in the pool. Her number is 314.961.5209.

Girls Craft Night - Friday, September 24th, 7:00- 9:00 pm. Come learn how to make a decorative pillow or just hang out with other women for a couple of hours. We will provide sewing machines, pillow forms and cording for purchase and instructions; you just need to bring a yard of fabric. Girls of all ages are invited. Questions? Call Terri Staten 314-821-5560.

If you like to quilt, we are organizing a “quilting bee” here at Cornerstone. ♥ This will be a fund raiser for our Women’s Ministry and a way to have that quilt top that you may have been storing until you found someone, hand quilted. Please contact joanne@cornerstonestaff.org if you want more information. We will begin on Monday, September 20th at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, September 25th between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. ♥ everyone is invited to help out with assorted maintenance items around our church building. Come at any time during the day for a few hours or stay all day. We will have pizza at noon – but no organized child care. If you have any questions, see Eric, Doug, Cindy, Sharon, or Lockwood (314-249-2202). We need to know how many can help, so please sign up in the lobby.

The Ruiz family thanks you for your prayers, cards, hugs, handshakes, and concern expressed for my mother and for us. My earthly father, Manuel, died peacefully and entered heaven immediately the morning of August 12, 2010. We rejoice for his eternal life, but he is and will be missed. Richard Ruiz

SMALL GROUPS

A small group leaders meeting is planned for Saturday, September 18th, at 9:00 a.m. in the Junior Church Room. Doughnuts, coffee and juice will be provided for breakfast. This time will be used for teaching, fellowship, mutual encouragement and planning. Going forward, our tentative plan is to have a meeting on the first Saturday morning of every other month. At each meeting a speaker will be invited to come and teach on a given topic. For the first meeting our topic is “What is a Small Group For?” and Aaron Goldstein will be the speaker. This meeting is open to anyone who is interested. Hope to see you there!

CONTINUING BIBLE STUDIES – Other studies are listed under the gender specific ministries below.

The Saturday morning Barnabas Project, open to men and women, led by Pastor Terry, meets from 7:30 to 8:30 in the Fireplace Room teaching through the book of Romans.

MISSIONS

Please continue to pray for the children who attended the camps in Moldova in July that they will find mentors and churches to continue their Bible studies and grow in Christ.

Keep Al Lewis, our ReachGlobal missionary, in your prayers as he travels to train pastors worldwide; and for his wife, Edie, whose elderly mother is now living with them. They are now in Burundi and Kenya. Be in prayer for them as they travel and minister there. Keep up with them through their blog, www.alandedie.blogspot.com, which they will update whenever possible.

THIS WEEK AT CORNERSTONE

We plan to keep you “new” in this newsletter beginning today. Some people don’t want to re-read “old” items, but we will continue to keep them in here for those who like reminders. But for those who want only “new” information, from today forward we will put the “NEW” symbol by everything that has not been in our bulletin and this newsletter prior to today, so you can skim to your heart’s content.

♥ Adopt-A-Platoon has assigned us an Army platoon of 39 soldiers (including 3 women) who are serving in Iraq until January. A list of requested items is available by the donation basket in the Welcome Center. Call Marta Guckes with questions (314-518-4310). We will have a cookie baking day on Sunday, August 15, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Come and help write notes to troops, bake and pack cookies.

Camp Cornerstone will be at Turkey Hill Ranch Camp on August 27 through 29. The deadline for signups is August 18th. Our speaker will be Richard Schumacher of Central District USA Reach National and his topic will be: “Great Discipleship! – Living as Radical Disciples in the Real World” “NEW”

“We will explore the radical discipleship of the early church as depicted in the Book of Acts. Our sessions will combine biblical teaching with interactive participation and some lighthearted exploration of the life of a disciple. Those who want to follow Jesus Christ have been called to “Embrace the Great Cause”, to” Rely on the Great Champion”, to “Live in the Great Community” and to “Make the Great Commitment”. Our time of study together should encourage you to embrace a lifestyle of radical discipleship impacting your life, your family, your church and the real-world community around you.”

Details to be forthcoming.

If you like to quilt, we are considering organizing a “quilting bee” here at Cornerstone. ♥ We anticipate making this a fund raiser for our Women’s Ministry and incorporating a devotional discussion as well. Please contact joanne@cornerstonestaff.org if you want more information. Also, if you have a quilt you have made and would like to enter it into a show at Friendship Village South to win $1,000 for Cornerstone, contact Jo Anne as well. The display dates are September 12 through September 19. Entries are limited so we need to apply quickly. Voting will be done by all visitors of the show and the church with the most votes wins.

♥ Calling Everyone With A Heart For The Unborn! On August 21st in Forest Park, THRIVE St. Louis will be holding their Annual 5k Run & Walk for Life. Anyone interested in running or walking can contact Katie Osburn (314-456-9405 cell/ 314-961-3304 home) or Bridget Gilbert (314-961-0281 home) to join the Cornerstone Team. And, if you are not interested in participating in the race but want to help out, please consider making a financial contribution to our team. Each year in St. Louis 5,000 abortions are performed. Let’s do all that we can to help local women make the decision to give their babies LIFE! Cornerstone would also like to get a Life Team together. Contact joanne@cornerstonestaff.org if you are interested and able to attend monthly meetings.

Would you be interested in ♥ hosting an international student for the upcoming academic year? St. Louis Community College has three male students (from Germany, Liberia and Russia) who are participating but have not yet been placed. Please check our hall bulletin board to get details and contact information.

Dear Cornerstone Family, Thanks so much for the cards, visits, and prayers before, during and after my hip replacement surgery. You are such a blessing! Continued prayers are always needed, but I must say I am doing great. I more often than not take off across the room without my walker! Love to you all, Susan Ritland

Dear Cornerstone Family, Your love and concern for me in the passing of my son, Mark, lifted me up in a hard time. You blessed me exceedingly. Thank you for the beautiful flowers you sent, in my favorite fall colors. How did you know? .. I love you all very much, Marilyn Brown

To our Cornerstone Family, A special thanks to Pastor Terry for his visit following my surgery. And thanks for all the phone calls, cards and prayers from the congregation. I felt your love and prayers. In his love, Joyce Clark

PLEASE PRAY

As many of you already have heard, tragically, the young man who was found drowned in a lake near St. Peters on Sunday as last weekend’s newspapers and news stations reported, was Michael Kowalewski, John and Joyce Clark’s 22-year-old grandson. Please keep his parents, Linda and Chester, and the entire Clark family in your prayers as they mourn this loss. Visitation is today at Baue Funeral Home, 3950 W. Clay, St. Charles – 2:00 pm for the family and 3:00 pm for everyone else. Funeral mass will be tomorrow, 10:00 a.m., at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2 Seton Ct., St. Charles, MO 63303 (636.946.6717).

He is still having an extremely difficult time coming to terms with Doolie’s death. Transfers between denial and anger. We have extended our stay here for another week to be with him. Any and all prayer is essential! The enemy is bearing down hard on him. Pray for Jesus to do battle with the enemy on his behalf please. Thanks to all, Deb Matush

Natalie Dare is scheduled to have surgery on Monday, August 2, to remove her tonsils and adenoids due to a recent diagnosis of severe sleep apnea. Please pray that 1) the surgery goes well and without complications, 2) recovery is quick and with minimal pain, and 3) surgery cures her sleep apnea without further need for intervention.

Pray for Al Burkhard as he is fighting infections in his body following recent surgery.

Remember to sign up for the first annual EFCA Missions Golf Tournament which will be held on Monday, July 26, at the Crescent Farms Golf Club near Eureka. Cost per player is $110. Non-golfers can participate by coming to the luncheon at 1:00. Luncheon tickets are $25 and a RSVP is needed. Proceeds go to local EFCA church planting efforts and to train EFCA missionaries overseas. Volunteers ♥ are needed to help with the tournament registration, sell mulligans, and drink carts (lunch is complimentary). Please contact the Cornerstone church office (314-968-9808) or Jack Kennedy (636-399-3083).

First E Free Church has a housing need for a missionary family of three (with a small dog) for one year. Contact Cathy Nelson cnelson@efree.org or 636.779.2187.

Camp Cornerstone will be at Turkey Hill Ranch Camp on August 27 through 29. Signups begin this Sunday, July 11th.

The Lost and Found basket is full. Please go through it to see if anything in it is yours. All remaining items will be donated in a few weeks. By the way, does anyone know to whom the 3 plastic bags of clothing and hanging coats belong to? They had a name on them a month ago and were moved to the coat rack because no one picked them up. We plan to donate them if no one claims them soon.

Congratulations to Chad and Dana Stuemke on the birth of William August on Friday, July 2nd, at 8:40 a.m. He weighed 8 lbs, 1oz. “All is perfect!” mom says. A care calendar has been set up for their family if you would like to bring them a meal. Go to http://www.carecalendar.org/logon/43407 and enter CALENDAR ID : 43407 and SECURITY CODE : 9915.

CONTINUING BIBLE STUDIES – Other studies are listed under the gender specific ministries below.

Rich Cartier leads a class on 1st Corinthians every Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the church office. The plans are to continue this class into the Fall. Rich will also teach this class during the 2nd hour on Sunday mornings through the summer.

The Saturday morning Barnabas Project, open to men and women, led by Pastor Terry, meets from 7:30 to 8:30 in the Fireplace Room using the Student Copy of the Men At The Cross One2Won cross training study guide. We encourage discipleship among ladies/young ladies as well as men/young men and this study helps each of us become familiar with and comfortable using a great tool for one-to-one or one-to-two discipleship. It is an extremely practical way of equipping men and women of Cornerstone to multiply disciple makers.
