THIS WEEK AT CORNERSTONE
February 7, 2010
Our next “Discovering Cornerstone” class will be this Sunday, February 7th, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., in the Junior Church Room and includes a light lunch. Do you know someone or have you talked with someone who has expressed a desire to become a member of Cornerstone? This is a prerequisite class for becoming a member and will be led by Pastor Terry. Please RSVP to joanne@cornerstonestaff.org. Remember, you must be a member of Cornerstone in order to vote at our congregational meetings.
Please make note of the following dates on your calendar for Cornerstone’s Annual Congregational Meeting:
Saturday, February 6th – The first Forum will be held in the Sanctuary, 9:00-10:00 a.m. This is an opportunity for people to ask questions regarding meeting agenda items such as the 2010 budget put together by the Deacon Board.
Tuesday, February 16th – A second Forum will be held in the Sanctuary, 7:00-8:00 p.m. for those who could not attend the first Forum.
Sunday, February 21st, one week prior to the Annual Meeting, copies of the written Annual Report will be available at church to everyone so each person will have time to read through it.
Sunday, February 28th – Annual Congregational Meeting in the Sanctuary. A potluck will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m., with childcare available (volunteers are needed – if you or your teens can help, please contact the church office). A list of food requests for the potluck will be publicized mid-February. This meeting will elect our new Elders and Deacons as well as approve our 2010 budget. Only members of Cornerstone will be able to vote – so if you are not yet a member and want to vote on our leadership and budget, you must attend the Discovering Cornerstone class on February 7th (see above).
The Nominating Committee recommended the candidates below to the elders for their consideration to the Elder and Deacon Boards. The committee, which consisted of Kathleen Buescher-Milligan, Kenny Brown, Rich Cartier, Ron Goldstein, and Nick Staten, spent about three months reviewing Scripture, discussing possible candidates, conferring with the elders and interviewing candidates. The elders accepted the nominations and are recommending the candidates to the congregation to be voted on at the Annual Congregational Meeting on February 28. If you have any questions, please direct them to one of the elders or committee members.
Recommendations for Elder Board: Mike Nehre (one year), Mike Thurman, Paul Scherfling, Allan Steele, Millard McDonald, John Ritland; For Deacon Board: Eric Jost and Lockwood Hill
Do you have time to touch a heart while you play? The Cornerstone MOPS ministry needs additional adult caregivers this semester. The commitment is only two Thursday mornings a month, and homeschoolers who have a desire to work with children are more than welcome. Their meetings are the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. The pay is $20, or you can volunteer your services to further benefit the ministry of MOPS. Contact Christine Mosley (314.324.3886) or Dana Stuemke (314.646.7597).
Would you like to speak better Spanish? Omar and Astrid Orozco will teach this intermediate class in the Garage Room every Friday, 7:00-8:30 p.m. This is not for beginners but for people who know some Spanish and just need to “bone up”. It is open to teens and adults, and if you have a bilingual Bible, bring it with you as they plan to use the Bible for their teaching. Please RSVP to the church office if you would like to attend.
An all-church basketball tournament is planned for Saturday, February 27th, 2:15-5:00 p.m. at the Webster Groves Recreational Center. Look for the blue poster on the counter of the Welcome Center and sign up. This is open to men, women and youth. Contact Aaron with questions.
The January Sunday Suppers were a HUGE success! Thank you to all the hosts for opening your homes! Nancy Hill will be back at the sign up table this Sunday and wants to see YOU there signing up for a FUN time of fellowship and food! You can be a host or just attend. If you are able to host a dinner where children can be included, please let Nancy know since some people who want to come have indicated they have a hard time finding sitters on a Sunday! Newcomers – this is a perfect way to get to know people in a relaxed and loving atmosphere. You can always call Nancy at 314-961-3874 or email nancphill@sbcglobal.net with any questions. See you at the sign up table Sunday!!
THE CORNERSTONE DIRECTORIES ARE HERE! We will have a table in the Welcome Center where you can stop by and pick up one per family. If you want additional directories, they will be $5.00 each to absorb the cost of the extra directories ordered.
ThriVe St. Louis, formerly Pregnancy Resource Center, is looking for individuals who can help with numerous needs of the center. More and more people are troubled by the tragedy of abortion and want to do something positive and life-affirming, but aren’t sure what to do. Copies of the extensive list is posted on the “Life” bulletin board in the church hallway. Please stop by, pick one up and give them a call. You will be welcomed with open arms!
BIBLE STUDIES
Rich Cartier leads a class on 1st Corinthians every Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the church office. Please call, email, or tell Rich if you want to attend.
The Saturday morning Barnabas Project, open to men and women, is led by Pastor Terry. It meets from 7:30 to 8:30 in the Fireplace Room using the Student Copy of the Men At The Cross One2Won cross-training study guide. We encourage the discipleship process among ladies/young ladies as well as men/young men and this study will help each of us become familiar with and comfortable using a great tool for one-to-one or one-to-two discipleship. It is an extremely practical way of equipping men and women of Cornerstone to multiply disciple makers. Please come.
Two Russian Bible Studies take place every Wednesday, 6:15 p.m., at the Parkway Baptist facility. The adults are led by Ion Cheptene and the youth by Terry Reznikov. Child care is provided.
MISSIONS
Plans are underway for this summer’s mission trip to Moldova. Would you like to go? The first youth camp will be Monday, July 5 through Saturday, July 10 studying the book Josef , led by Uliana and Ion Cotorobai –– The second youth camp will be Monday, July 12 through Saturday, July 17 studying the book What Does the Bible Say About Sex? , led by Svetlana and Nicolai Syli. The Brockman family (Ernie, Denise, Trey and Eli) is going back to Mexico on another mission trip this summer (Saturday, June 19 through Saturday, June 26). They invite anyone interested in joining them to contact them directly at 314.963.1295 or emb2×2@juno.com to learn more about it.
Be part of those who teach English to people overseas using the Bible and Skype right from their own home. This is a commitment of an hour per week. The number of students depends upon your comfort stage (i.e. 1 student, 5 students, 20 students, etc.). There are three levels: 1st is basic English; 2nd is for those who know some English; and, 3rd is those who speak fluently and want to learn conversational English. We would like to continue this through April. If this interests you, please contact Ion or the church office.
MEN’S MINISTRY
The Friday 7:00 a.m. Men’s Bible Study at First Watch in Webster is back! The topic is One2Won discipleship, similar to the Saturday morning study, and all men are welcome to attend.
WOMEN’S MINISTRY
Every Tuesday, 9:00-11:00 a.m., Susan Ritland leads a class in the Junior Church Room on the book, Devotional Classics. This is the same class she taught in the evenings last semester. RSVP to Susan at sritland@sbcglobal.net.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
IMPORTANT!! Because we have so many 2-year-old’s, we continue to need a third helper in the 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning class. We could also use more helpers in our nursery. Men, you can help too! We have lots of boys in the class. Please note that you must go through the Child Protection Class before you can work with our children. Contact Anne or the office.
Attention preschool parents – please pick up your children right after first service so teachers can make the transition to second hour.
A two-hour seminar on “How to Lead Young Children to Christ” led by Pastor Terry will be held this Saturday, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., in the Sanctuary. This is open to anyone interested but we strongly encourage all the teachers of our children to attend. A light breakfast will be served and child care will be provided. Please RSVP to joanne@cornerstonestaff.org if you are coming and if you need child care.
PRAYER REQUESTS
Doug Mavis asks for prayer as he will have eye surgery to correct a chronic case of double vision, due to the MS, on Tuesday Feb 9th at SLU Hospital (the surgery is outpatient). Please pray for peace and calmness, and for a successful surgery with no complications from the surgery or the anesthesia.
Pray for continued healing for Lee Burns; Tracey Calhoun (receives her defibrillator on March 18th); Marilyn Brown’s son, Mark; Ed Bielik’s mother; Cal and Sue Swan’s son, Ben; Oleg Reznikov and his family; Debbie Showers and her mom, Brenda Meredith, and her friend, Carol Dattoli; and, for Karen Felton (praise that she now has a full-time helper in Joan). Please pray for healing and comfort for everyone mentioned and their families.
Continue to pray for the Russian Jews who invited Jesus into their hearts at the outreach on November 22nd and that mentors can be found to continue studying with them. Also continue to pray for Cornerstone missionaries, students and those going through personal trials and health issues; and, for Immanuel, Pastor Todd and their congregation.
Our Monday evening prayer group meets at 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Junior Church Room; and the 50/50 prayer group continually meets every Thursday morning from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. in the Fireplace Room. Everyone is welcome to join either or both groups.
| If and when you have prayer requests, be sure to call or send them to the church office by Wednesday Noon so they can be included in this communiqué and in Sunday’s bulletin. |
SERVING CORNERSTONE
We can always use help somewhere. Sign up through the Welcome sheet in your Sunday bulletin or call or email the church office to joanne@cornerstonestaff.org and we will plug you in.
REMINDER! We continually collect used laser and ink jet printer cartridges and old cell phones for our silent recycling fundraiser – place them in the basket located by the elevator in the foyer.
