THIS WEEK AT CORNERSTONE
January 20, 2010
The next “Discovering Cornerstone” class is on our calendar. Do you know someone or have you talked with someone who has expressed a desire to become a member of Cornerstone? Our prerequisite class, “Discovering Cornerstone” led by Pastor Terry, is planned for Sunday, February 7th, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., in the Junior Church Room and will include a light lunch. Please RSVP to joanne@cornerstonestaff.org.
Cornerstone’s Annual Congregational Meeting schedule has been finalized. Please make note of these dates on your calendar:
Saturday, February 6th – The first Forum will be held in the Sanctuary, 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Tuesday, February 16th – A second Forum will be held in the Sanctuary, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Sunday, February 21st, one week prior to the Annual Meeting, copies of the written Annual Report will be available at church to everyone so each person will have time to read through it.
Sunday, February 28th – Annual Congregational Meeting in the Sanctuary. A potluck will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m., with childcare available (volunteers are needed – if you or your teens can help, please contact the church office). A list of food requests for the potluck will be publicized mid-February. This meeting will elect our new Elders and Deacons as well as approve our 2010 budget. Only members of Cornerstone will be able to vote – so if you are not yet a member and want to vote on our leadership, you must attend the Discovering Cornerstone class on February 7th (see above).
We received the following response from Bethany Gorman who is attending Hannibal LaGrange College in Hannibal, Missouri. You may remember she has spoken to us about her Haiti missions and we have contributed to help with the cost. She responded last Thursday to our request for an update on her contacts at Haiti and writes:
Hey there… We have just heard from our missionaries there in Haiti today. They are all safe and sound, well as sound as can be. As far as a trip there this spring, I am not sure what the status is after the happenings of this week. If they do take a trip, I will not be going with them because I am student teaching this semester and it is just too much. However, I was going to come and talk to the church about that trip and also my mission plans in the future. I will let you know more details as they come to me. Continue to keep Haiti and the missionaries there in prayers because things aren’t going to get better soon. Thanks for the email and the concern. Talk to you soon!! Bethany Gorman
As you hear the news about Haiti and feel that you would like to help by making a donation somewhere, but you want to make sure it will actually go there, watch the videos at www.samartanspurse.org. They have been bringing in much needed help and are seeking donations to defray that cost. Another site to visit is http://www.kanakuk.com/haiti/ which is put out by Kanakuk Ministries. Joe White, the founder of Men at the Cross, is president of this ministry and has been involved with the children in Haiti for 10 years. He writes: “If you would like to help, our short term focus will be food, water and medical supplies. Long term, we will need to rebuild the schools, orphanages and housing for the kids and their families. We have partners on the ground ready to distribute food and get to work rebuilding. Any contribution will be put to use with great efficiency.”
Do you have time to touch a heart while you play? The Cornerstone MOPS ministry needs additional adult caregivers this semester. The commitment is only two Thursday mornings a month, and homeschoolers who have a desire to work with children are more than welcome. Their meetings are the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. The pay is $20, or you can volunteer your services to further benefit the ministry of MOPS. Contact Christine Mosley (314.324.3886) or Dana Stuemke (314.646.7597).
An all-church basketball tournament is planned for Saturday, February 27th, 2:15-5:00 p.m. at the Webster Groves Recreational Center. Look for the blue poster on the counter of the Welcome Center and sign up. This is open to men, women and youth. Contact Aaron with questions.
Our “Lost and Found” bin needs to be emptied. If you have lost or misplaced something, please check this bin. We plan to empty and donate the contents to Goodwill next week.
REMINDER – Bulletin Board Notices: We have added a new posting for an opening at Christ Community Church. Please see the “Opportunities” bulletin board alongside the Sanctuary if you know anyone who may be interested. Feel free to take a copy as several are available.
Dear Cornerstone Family, Thank you so much for blessing us with a (much needed) laundry basket filled with gifts for Benjamin and our family. It was a fun surprise! We appreciate the ministry of Cornerstone and look forward to learning and growing with the church. Grateful, Andrew, Stacy, Elizabeth and Benjamin Russel
BIBLE STUDIES
Rich Cartier leads a class on 1st Corinthians every Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the church office. Please call, email, or tell Rich if you want to attend.

MISSIONS
Believe it or not, it is time to plan our summer mission trip to Moldova. Would you like to go? The first youth camp will be on Monday, July 5 through Saturday, July 10 studying the book Josef , led by Uliana and Ion Cotorobai –– The second youth camp will be on Monday, July 12 through Saturday, July 17 studying the book What Does the Bible Say About Sex? , led by Svetlana and Nicolai Syli. If you would like to accompany Ion Cheptene on either or both of these trips, please contact Ion or talk with him on Sunday.
The Brockman family (Ernie, Denise, Trey and Eli) is going back to Mexico on another mission trip this summer (Saturday, June 19 through Saturday, June 26). They invite anyone interested in joining them to contact them directly at 314.963.1295 or emb2×2@juno.com to learn more about it.
Be part of those who teach English to people overseas using the Bible and Skype right from their own home. This is a commitment of an hour per week. The number of students depends upon your comfort stage (i.e. 1 student, 5 students, 20 students, etc.). There are three levels: 1st is basic English; 2nd is for those who know some English; and, 3rd is those who speak fluently and want to learn conversational English. We would like to continue this through April. If this interests you, please contact Ion or the church office.
CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
As you take your Christmas decorations down, if you have anything you want or need to dispose of, that’s usable, of course, please consider donating it/them to our Children’s Ministry. Anne Parker would love to have them for the rooms downstairs for next year.
IMPORTANT!! Because we have so many 2-year-old’s, we need a third helper in the 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning class. We could also use more helpers in our nursery. Men, you can help, too! Contact Anne or the office.
Attention preschool parents – please pick up your children right after first service so teachers can make the transition to the second hour.
A two-hour seminar on “How to Lead Young Children to Christ” led by Pastor Terry will be held on Saturday, January 30th, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., in the Junior Church Room. This is open to anyone interested but we strongly encourage all the teachers of our children to attend. A light breakfast will be served and child care will be provided. Please RSVP to joanne@cornerstonestaff.org.
STUDENT MINISTRY
Saturday, January 30, 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Meet at Pizza Street, 8073 Watson Road, for lunch (bring 5 dollars for the buffet and more for a drink), then walk to the church for a Mario Kart tournament on the big screen. Who will win? Only Aaron knows!
WOMEN’S MINISTRY
Every Tuesday, 9:00-11:00 a.m., Susan Ritland leads a class in the Junior Church Room on the book, Devotional Classics. This is the same class she taught in the evenings last semester. RSVP to Susan at sritland@sbcglobal.net.
“The Power of Praying for Your Adult Children,” a 14-week study by Stormie Omartian, will be offered beginning next Tuesday, January 26th, for our Tuesday Night Women’s Bible Study, led by Marilyn McDonald. We start at 6:30 p.m. with a bowl of soup, then study and pray from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. If you have children in their late teens or beyond, please join us! To register and obtain required study texts, please e-mail Karol Schoenfeld at karolschoenfeld@gmail.com.

Please pray for healing and comfort for everyone mentioned and their families.
