THIS WEEK AT CORNERSTONE
January 27, 2010
Our next “Discovering Cornerstone” class will be held on Sunday, February 7th, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., in the Junior Church Room and includes a light lunch. Do you know someone or have you talked with someone who has expressed a desire to become a member of Cornerstone? This is a prerequisite class for becoming a member and will be led by Pastor Terry. Please RSVP to joanne@cornerstonestaff.org. Remember, you must be a member of Cornerstone in order to vote at our congregational meetings.
Please make note of the following dates on your calendar for Cornerstone’s Annual Congregational Meeting:
Saturday, February 6th – The first Forum will be held in the Sanctuary, 9:00-10:00 a.m. This is an opportunity for people to ask questions regarding meeting agenda items such as the 2010 budget put together by the Deacon Board.
Tuesday, February 16th – A second Forum will be held in the Sanctuary, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Sunday, February 21st, one week prior to the Annual Meeting, copies of the written Annual Report will be available at church to everyone so each person will have time to read through it.
Sunday, February 28th – Annual Congregational Meeting in the Sanctuary. A potluck will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m., with childcare available (volunteers are needed – if you or your teens can help, please contact the church office). A list of food requests for the potluck will be publicized mid-February. This meeting will elect our new Elders and Deacons as well as approve our 2010 budget. Only members of Cornerstone will be able to vote – so if you are not yet a member and want to vote on our leadership, you must attend the Discovering Cornerstone class on February 7th (see above).
Do you have time to touch a heart while you play? The Cornerstone MOPS ministry needs additional adult caregivers this semester. The commitment is only two Thursday mornings a month, and homeschoolers who have a desire to work with children are more than welcome. Their meetings are the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. The pay is $20, or you can volunteer your services to further benefit the ministry of MOPS. Contact Christine Mosley (314.324.3886) or Dana Stuemke (314.646.7597).
Would you like to speak better Spanish? Omar and Astrid Orozco will teach this intermediate class in the Garage Room on Fridays, 7:00-8:30 p.m., beginning February 5. This is not for beginners but for people who know some Spanish and just need to “bone up”. It is open to teens and adults, and if you have a bilingual Bible, please bring it as they plan to use the Bible for their teaching. Please RSVP to the church office if you would like to attend.
An all-church basketball tournament is planned for Saturday, February 27th, 2:15-5:00 p.m. at the Webster Groves Recreational Center. Look for the blue poster on the counter of the Welcome Center and sign up. This is open to men, women and youth. Contact Aaron with questions.
Last chance!!! Our “Lost and Found” bin needs to be emptied. If you have lost or misplaced something, please check this bin. We plan to empty and donate the contents to Goodwill this week.
REMINDER – Bulletin Board Notices: We have added a new posting for an opening at Christ Community Church. Please see the “Opportunities” bulletin board alongside the Sanctuary if you know anyone who may be interested. Feel free to take a copy as several are available.
Several Haiti relief organizations were mentioned in last Wednesday’s e-letter. Another one brought to our attention is Mission Possible, an evangelical organization that has operated in Haiti and the Dominican Republic for over 30 years in areas of child sponsorship, leadership and community development, vocational training and school and church construction. Approximately 2,600 students in seven Mission Possible schools, six in Haiti, receive an academic and Christian education as well as nutritious meals. If you are interested in making online donations to Mission Possible and learn more about their work in Haiti and the DR, please use the following link which includes the latest earthquake updates — http://www.ourmissionispossible.org/2010-01-12%20Earthquake.htm.
A note received in the office this week:
Thank you! I have finished treatment and my energy is returning. I look back on the last nine months and marvel at all the help and kindness we received. Our family was blessed because of YOU. Thank you. With love, Laurie, Craig, Isaac and Sam Severson Swedish Proverb – A joy shared, is a joy doubled; A sorrow shared is a sorrow halved.
BIBLE STUDIES
Rich Cartier leads a class on 1st Corinthians every Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the church office. Please call, email, or tell Rich if you want to attend.
Come to the Saturday morning Barnabas Project led by Pastor Terry. It meets from 7:30 to 8:30 in the Fireplace Room using the Student Copy of the Men At The Cross One2Won cross-training study guide. If you don’t have one, we can provide one to you. We encourage the discipleship process among ladies/young ladies as well as men/young men and this study will help each of us become familiar with and comfortable using a great tool for one-to-one or one-to-two discipleship. It is an extremely practical way of equipping men and women of Cornerstone to multiply disciple makers. Please come.
Two Russian Bible Studies take place every Wednesday, 6:15 p.m., at the Parkway Baptist facility. The adults are led by Ion Cheptene and the youth by Terry Reznikov. Child care is provided.
MISSIONS
Plans are underway for this summer’s mission trip to Moldova. Would you like to go? The first youth camp will be on Monday, July 5 through Saturday, July 10 studying the book Josef , led by Uliana and Ion Cotorobai –– The second youth camp will be on Monday, July 12 through Saturday, July 17 studying the book What Does the Bible Say About Sex? , led by Svetlana and Nicolai Syli. The Brockman family (Ernie, Denise, Trey and Eli) is going back to Mexico on another mission trip this summer (Saturday, June 19 through Saturday, June 26). They invite anyone interested in joining them to contact them directly at 314.963.1295 or emb2×2@juno.com to learn more about it.
Be part of those who teach English to people overseas using the Bible and Skype right from their own home. This is a commitment of an hour per week. The number of students depends upon your comfort stage (i.e. 1 student, 5 students, 20 students, etc.). There are three levels: 1st is basic English; 2nd is for those who know some English; and, 3rd is those who speak fluently and want to learn conversational English. We would like to continue this through April. If this interests you, please contact Ion or the church office.
CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
IMPORTANT!! Because we have so many 2-year-old’s, we need a third helper in the 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning class. We could also use more helpers in our nursery. Men, you can help too! We have lots of boys in the class. Contact Anne or the office.
Attention preschool parents – please pick up your children right after first service so teachers can make the transition to second hour.
A two-hour seminar on “How to Lead Young Children to Christ” led by Pastor Terry will be held this Saturday, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., in the Sanctuary. This is open to anyone interested but we strongly encourage all the teachers of our children to attend. A light breakfast will be served and child care will be provided. Please RSVP to joanne@cornerstonestaff.org if you are coming and if you need child care.

PRAYER REQUESTS
Lee Burns has been in St. John’s ICU since early Saturday, bleeding internally, but was moved into a regular room Monday evening. The doctors took him off of his blood thinner for 4-5 weeks. Because blood clots form in his body, this is a great concern. Please pray that he will be OK until he can get back on the blood medication. An update from Vicki: “His blood count dropped a bit then leveled out and even went up a fraction. This indicates that the bleed is fixed for the most part. He has developed a caugh and they may scan his right leg for a clot today. If all is well, he will be released today. He is in room 627 & can receive calls @ (314) 567-2627.”
Tracey Calhoun received results from her echocardiogram last week and found she will have to be on a defibrillator to monitor her heart rhythm. Marilyn Brown’s son, Mark, is in the hospital with internal bleeding. Ed Bielik’s mother had pneumonia and kidney failure and just came home from the hospital Sunday. Also, John Ritland is currently driving their daughter, Carrie, and her three children to Amarillo, Texas. Pray for a safe journey.
Continue to pray for the Russian Jews who invited Jesus into their hearts at the outreach on November 22nd and that mentors can be found to continue studying with them; for Cal and Sue Swan’s son, Ben; Oleg Reznikov and his family; Debbie Showers and her mom, Brenda Meredith; for her friend, Carol Dattoli; and for Karen Felton (praise that she now has a full-time helper in Joan). Please pray for healing and comfort for everyone mentioned and their families. Also pray for travel safety for Karen Koons who drove by herself to Indianapolis on Sunday to stay with her grandsons for the week while their parents are in Budapest for a Campus Crusade affair. Karen plans to return home Saturday.
Also continue to pray for Cornerstone missionaries, students and those going through personal trials and health issues; and, for Immanuel, Pastor Todd and their congregation.
Our Monday evening prayer group meets at 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Junior Church Room; and the 50/50 prayer group continually meets every Thursday morning from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. in the Fireplace Room. Everyone is welcome to join either or both groups.
SERVING CORNERSTONE
We can always use help somewhere. Sign up through the Welcome sheet in your Sunday bulletin or call or email the church office to joanne@cornerstonestaff.org and we will plug you in.
REMINDER! We continually collect used laser and ink jet printer cartridges and old cell phones for our silent recycling fundraiser – place them in the basket located by the elevator in the foyer.
